PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL EXAMINATION

It’s a requirement employment to conduct pre-employment medical examinations on all employees before they enter office.

Employment Act of Botswana:

46. Medical examination

(1) Subject to subsection (3), every employee who enters into a contract of employment to which this Part applies shall be examined by a medical office

(2) Except in exceptional circumstances, the employees shall be medically examined and a medical certificate issued before the attestation of the contract of employment Employees who are found to have a manageable chronic disease get medical management advice from the doctors to improve his general wellness during the course of employment.

As per job demand, the following examinations are conducted on employees as pre-employment assessment.

Occupational and Medical history documentation.

  • Height, weight, blood pressure and urine analysis.
  • Lung function test (FEV1, FVC and FVC %).
  • Vision screening.
  • Audiometric screening Baseline/screening audiogram
  • Physical examination and urine test.
  • Chest X-Ray or Back X rays
  • Special vision test (color, depth perception, peripheral vision and visual acuity) can be performed on drivers and operators of heavy machinery.

EXIT MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS

Exit medical examinations are essential when an employee has had his/her contract terminated. The purpose is to establish whether the individual has contracted a disease or sustained an injury for which they could claim compensation.

RETURN TO WORK MEDICALS

If an employee has taken a leave of absence due to ill health, a return-to-work medical examination will be performed to ensure that he/she is fit enough to resume the demands of his/her job.
